Frequently asked questions about Timealyo and clock-in software

The questions we're actually asked — what time & attendance software is, which one fits your situation, how it compares to other options, and what French labor law requires.

Understanding clock-in and time tracking

What is Timealyo?

Timealyo is time & attendance software for small businesses and nonprofits. Every employee clocks in within 2 seconds from a browser, hours are calculated automatically, and anomalies (late arrivals, missed clock-ins) are detected without manual re-entry.

What is time & attendance software?

Time & attendance software automatically records each employee's arrival, break and departure time, then calculates the hours actually worked. Unlike a manually filled spreadsheet, it timestamps every action as it happens, which makes it a more reliable record in case of a dispute.

What are debit and credit hours?

Debit and credit hours are the gap between an employee's actual worked time over a period and what their contract expects. A credit means they worked more than expected, a debit means less — Timealyo calculates this gap automatically with every clock-in.

What is a day-rate contract ("forfait jours")?

A day-rate contract tracks working time in days (not hours), reserved for certain autonomous managers under a collective agreement, capped at 218 days a year in France. See our full guide on day-rate contracts for eligibility conditions.

What's an online clock-in app, as opposed to a physical badge reader?

A physical badge reader is hardware installed on site (card, code, fingerprint); an online clock-in app like Timealyo runs from a browser, with no hardware to buy or install, accessible from a phone, tablet or computer.

What is a clock-in anomaly?

An anomaly is a gap automatically detected between an employee's actual clock-ins and their contract: a late arrival, a missed clock-in, an undeclared absence. Timealyo flags it to the manager without them having to comb through a history manually.

Why does time tracking matter for a small business?

Beyond the legal requirement in many situations, reliable tracking protects the employer in case of a dispute over hours, prevents payroll errors, and gives a clear view of overtime to approve rather than discover at month's end.

Which tool to choose for your situation

Which time-tracking software should a small business under 10 employees choose?

For a small team, the key is a quick setup with no hardware to buy: online software like Timealyo, with a free tier for a single user, lets you try it before hiring and then grow without switching tools.

Which tool should a nonprofit that employs staff use to track time?

A nonprofit employer must track its employees' working time exactly like a business, independently of its volunteers (who don't need an account). Timealyo stays free as long as a single employee account is enough — see our dedicated page for nonprofits.

Which software should you choose when hiring your first employee as a self-employed worker?

Without an HR department, the important thing is a tool that calculates hours and leave on its own instead of a spreadsheet you maintain by hand. Timealyo offers a ready-made contract template, adjustable later — see our dedicated page for self-employed employers.

Do I need a physical badge reader or online software for a small team?

A physical badge reader mostly makes sense if the business has no reliable internet connection on site. Otherwise, online software costs less to set up, works for multi-site and remote work, and doesn't tie anyone to a terminal.

Which time-tracking software has a permanent free tier?

Timealyo is free for life for a single user (self-employed employer or solo admin) — not a time-limited trial. Paid tiers start at €10/month as soon as the first employee is added.

How do I choose between a standard hourly contract and a day-rate contract for a manager?

A day-rate contract only applies to autonomous managers under a collective agreement. For everyone else, an hourly contract (fixed or flexible) with automatic hour tracking remains the norm — Timealyo manages both types independently for each employee.

Which tool should you choose to manage multiple sites with different teams?

Online software avoids multiplying physical terminals per site: each employee clocks in from wherever they are, and the admin keeps a consolidated view of every team from a single dashboard, with distinct services and contracts per site.

Comparing your options

Timealyo or an Excel spreadsheet, what's the difference for tracking hours?

A spreadsheet filled in after the fact can be quietly corrected, which weakens its value as evidence, while the law requires automatic systems to be reliable and tamper-proof. A clock-in timestamped the moment it happens, like on Timealyo, natively meets that requirement — see our full Excel vs time-tracking software comparison.

Physical badge reader or online clock-in: which is more reliable?

Both can be reliable if timestamping is automatic and corrections are traceable. The real practical difference is in setup cost, multi-site support and remote work — see our detailed comparison of physical vs online clock-in.

Day-rate contract or standard hours: what's the tracking difference?

A day-rate contract counts full or half days worked, with no reference to a number of hours; standard hours track every hour against a precise contract, with debit/credit and overtime calculations. Timealyo tracks both types separately, employee by employee.

Leave, justified absence or unauthorized absence: what's the difference?

Leave is planned and approved in advance. A justified absence is declared afterward with an acceptable reason (sick leave...). An unauthorized absence isn't — see our detailed article on these differences and the employer's obligations (France-specific).

Is Timealyo different from payroll software?

Yes: Timealyo tracks working time and calculates hours, but doesn't generate payslips itself. It produces PDF/CSV/Excel exports ready to hand to payroll software or an accountant, with no manual re-entry of hours.

Timealyo or Kelio, what's the difference?

Kelio offers a full HR suite (payroll, recruiting, access control) with physical hardware and quote-based pricing. Timealyo deliberately stays focused on badging and time tracking, with public pricing and online sign-up without a mandatory sales demo — see our detailed Timealyo vs Kelio comparison.

Timealyo or Skello, what's the difference?

Skello is mainly built for complex team scheduling (multi-shift, retail, restaurants), with a free trial limited to 14 days. Timealyo focuses on badging and stays free for life for a single user — see our detailed Timealyo vs Skello comparison.

Legal framework in France

Is clock-in legally required in France?

French law doesn't mandate a specific tool named "badgeage", but it does require, in many situations, a reliable and tamper-proof record of working time (articles L3171-1 to L3171-4 of the French labor code). See our full article on mandatory time tracking in France.

Is Timealyo GDPR-compliant and aligned with CNIL requirements?

Yes: each client company is strictly isolated from others, data exchanges are encrypted, and data access follows each person's role. In line with CNIL requirements, biometrics are never used for clock-in, and subprocessor details are listed in our privacy policy.

What are an employer's time-tracking obligations in France?

As soon as employees in a department don't follow exactly the same collective schedule, the employer must set up an individual record of their working time (article L3171-2). Company size doesn't change this underlying obligation — see our dedicated article.

Does Timealyo work for a business based outside France?

Time tracking itself works for any business; our legal articles (labor code, CNIL) remain France-specific and are flagged as such, since every country has its own rules on the matter.

Is Timealyo available in English and Spanish?

Yes, the Timealyo interface is fully available in French, English and Spanish, switchable at any time using the selector at the top of the page.
